Yep. Forever. Death for Hardcore characters is real, and indeed, it is like all of your hard work never happened. Thankfully it's optional (for some Roguelike games, this was the case for EVERY player character; the Doom Roguelike is a modern example).
This kinda makes me think of whoever it was that wrote that article essentially praising the first Zelda game for being intentionally nonintuitive ("where is that last dungeon?!").
