Bingo. The proper way to play MK8D is to be so far ahead in 1st place you can be hit by 2-3 items without being overtaken.

This was exactly my experience as well, but using the joycon grip instead of a pro controller. I’m not opposed to motion controls at all, but they just did not click for me. Switching to the grip instantly improved my ability to play and win.
