The difference is that they have a contract in place to allow them to do this. They have a bugout clause in place. They got to pay that $10 million penalty, and to walk away without incurring any other charges.

Has she looked into travel nursing? My wife has had a few fellow nurses who switch to travel jobs with their tech husbands who can work remote. Many can limit that travel to a relatively close radius depending on the region and make even better money with full benefits.

It might be crazy / scary for your wife to do this, but she could probably very easily move to NY or California right now, get on the front lines AND get what she deserves for the work. Hell, if you are remote, you may be able to go with her and support her emotionally and at home.
