Yes, you do need yogurt starter as you really don't want just any bacteria. But, you can start with some commercial yogurt for the first batch. After that? Reserve some yogurt you've made for a next starter. Repeat as long as it stays alive. 

Theres really no recipe. I use a half gallon of regijar fat milk, usually grass fed. Pour in pot, hit the yogurt button until it says boil. Heat to 180 fahrenheit. Let cool to about 110.
