they were trying to avoid being a perennial contender for the 8th seed by taking BPA and tanking. I figured Hinkie knew one or two of these guys would miss entire seasons at a time, so it was kinda a BOGO deal from the start. Easy to sit back in retrospect and say “who they shoulda picked” but at the time they were considered good moves and even ballsy upside gambles (with Noel and Embiid slipping due to injury).

Hinkie was very good at accumulating assets and selling snake oil like “MCW is totally worth a possible top 5 pick” without snickering during negotiations.

Saric is a success because they got him, and a lottery pick, in exchange for Elfrid Payton. As long as he doesn’t murder a teammate, he’s already a success (if you want to be pedantic, you can claim Payton was the successful pick and not Saric, but the transaction as a whole is unarguable)
