The best thing that happened to Marvel was losing the rights to make Spider-Man and X-Men movies, as it forced them to look beyond the obvious and rely on less obvious characters, which has lead them to have much wider cast of characters. DC is hooked on Superman and Batman and is destined to do them forever.

They had a separate George Miller JL movie in production in 2008, but the writer’s strike and Nolan seemed to kill it. Reportedly, Nolan didn’t want a competing cinematic Batman before he finished his trilogy.

I think a lot of WB’s motivation for the direction of the DCEU had to do with sales figures for comics. They ignored the most critically acclaimed and beloved stories and instead zeroed in on the best selling stuff. Like The Dark Knight Returns (well liked but definitely NOT what the foundation for Batman should be)…
