It would totally be an interesting story considering it's one thing for a game to go through development hell but for a triple A company like SquEnix it's totally different. Plus you'd think they'd have canceled in but instead it just trudged on for nearly ten years.

I agree, I've had many moments in the series when dealing with an NPC and find myself saying "Man I wish I could play as that guy/girl". Dyne in 7 or Beatrix in 9 are great examples of strong NPCs with personality depth that rivals the entire cast. To this day I'd still love to Have Beatrix playable in 9.

I think Eli is Raiden and if we aren't playing as Big Boss then my money is on us playing as Solidus. Solidus, the first clone of Big Boss being sent in to take down Big Boss similar to Snake in the original Metal Gear. That would also roll with the body double idea and Solidus being Ishmael.
