The ending with the dorky white male teenager returning to the island like he’s some kind of enlightened being who’s not capable of being a destructive colonizing force is ridiculous to me. He will always have mommy and daddy’s money to prop him up. Felt a little Mary Sue-ish IMO.

Yeah honestly plenty of wealthy POC mainlanders go to Hawaii to live out the same tourist fantasies as white wealthy people. Often with the same delusions of “finding themselves” or “experiencing the local culture” or whatever. Paula may not be from Mossbacher-level moolah, but I don’t buy that she’s financially

I stopped commenting and visiting because I fucking can’t stand the way the comments load... Why the fuck can’t we search by most recent? It’s made commenting tricky, and this place feels like way less of a community now.

I’ve been a Cinefamily member for the last two years (that’s when I moved back to L.A.), and I lived down the street and went ALL THE TIME. Had a Black Card and all that. Before that, I lived in Austin, and I was at the Drafthouse almost 24/7. I have a Fantastic Fest badge for this year, and have been a couple of

Haha, would LOVE to see what Frieda’s house looks like. And Issa’s reaction to it.

Agreed. Also, can the whole “fear” as a villain conceit is so stupid and overdone.

Agreed! The movie just feels like such a random pile of “scary stuff” that doesn’t amount to anything. Just a waste of time! And yeah, like you said, they did a terrible job setting up any sort of backstory that makes sense/gives It a real reason for being. I started shrugging about halfway through.

I liked Christine! Thought *it* was a lot better than It, at least.

This is truly one of the most tedious movies I’ve EVER SEEN. Like, worse than Halloween 6. Treacly, not scary, tired, trite, bland, RIDICULOUS.

I sort of see what you’re saying, but I think there’s a more punk/rock edge to this than anything CO ever did. Alvvays is poppy, but to me, CO was more straightforward pop (and at times softer kinda acoustic stuff—I always loved “Let’s Go Bowling”).

SAME! I moved to L.A. two years ago (from Austin), and I’m stoked I’m finally going back to Fantastic Fest this year.

I like Lake Bell (Boston Legal forever!), but the trailer for this looked excruciating, and the title is really dumb. Is it better than the trailer suggests? (I’m a middle-class white person who already hates middle-class white people.)

Yes! Found that to be very interesting. As a white nearly 30-something woman, I never heard any stigma about giving blowjobs. And I don’t mind giving them at all.

I read this as BEGGING, and I was like, “that’s weird as fuck” and totally something the A.V. Supper Club would cover.

Same! I’m a member, but I’m really considering cancelling next month if they don’t make moves to show they’re serious about combatting this and changing the behind-the-scenes culture. Seeing majorly creepy accusations surface, and an Uber driver who claims HB assaulted him with a cup of hot coffee (wtf). I hope none

YIKES. Nate was by far my least favorite character (okay, other than LISAAAAA). Also, I left L.A. to move to Austin after college and lived there for about five years! Loved it there; was just the place I needed to be. I often think I’ll move back there someday.

Agreed. And in this country, if you're half white-, half-anything, you're still treated as "other." You may get a lot more privileges than a person who isn't half-white, but you will never be seen quite the same way.

Very true! I do think there's something to that…

Same… I don't think it's fair to say Asian people are white, because that ignores the racism against Asian people. I'm white, but my Asian friends have frequently been subjected to racism and fetishization. I've had Asian friends being mistreated by cops and generally talked to like they're supposed to act a certain

Agreed. I think it was just supposed to show non-black basic bitches fetishizing black men…
