yeah i’m sure you were out there talking about dispropotionate effects POCs when a POC was president.
Race equality is not equality of outcome, it’s equality of opportunity.
The Republicans aren’t making things us vs. them - progressives are.
Really? So I guess when the ozone is depleted and the air becomes poisoned and food is unable to be produced, my Hispanic/German/Irish son will just be cool with it? His impact will be less than that of a black?
Well, not really. It’s certainly not going to kill us all instantaneously. You seem to have a really shallow understanding of how this works. I know it makes you feel superior to imagine that I’m some kind of wacky SJW, but you actually just look kind of ignorant here.
In the US, race is the best predictor of a person living near pollution. A 1987 report found that communities living dangerously close to landfills were overwhelmingly black and poor. Twenty years later, a 2007 report found that people of color still make up the majority of folks living within 3 kilometers (1.8 miles)…
what’s the saying? when you’re accustomed to privilege, equality looks like oppression? something like that.
“Climate change is bad” is the most simplistic possible way to look at this. It doesn’t help us figure out why, or how to prevent it getting worse, or how to mitigate its effects. It’s next to useless.
All available evidence suggests that this affects people more strongly and more immediately based on their race and socioeconomic status. No one is “making” it about race - race is an actual, measurable factor for this issue. You could make the argument that it’s primarily socioeconomic, but that still implicates race…
It’s funny. I never get these types of comments when I write about the disproportionate impact of enviro policy on coal workers and the rural poor in WV or MT. What is it about centering people of color that reads as a distraction (“pollution”) to some commenters? Do you care less about pollution having read this,…
When you set out to look for racism, you’ll find it wherever you look.
Why do you have such a problem with people rightfully recognizing that things like pollution and climate change affect poor people and people of color first and disproportionately? If you want to talk about environmental issues and just ignore all the issues around how vulnerable human communities are impacted, you’re…
You do realize you just “All Lives Matter”’ed the environment, right?
I see what you’re saying but the point of this article is that it doesn’t affect everyone equally. Statistically some people (based on race) are more likely to be living closer to these pollution sources, less likely to be able to move away, and will be affected and hurt more than the average.
Hon, if you’ve been here a while, I’ve been very open about being a mentally ill, former low-income POC in an interracial marriage. I am no stranger to prejudice. What I do oppose is reactionary drivel like this. My status does not eliminate my basic human duties to be rational, informed and well-reasoned. I still…
We can talk about that, but let’s not pretend that suddenly capitalism is an issue when a Black woman is rich and famous as fuck. Let’s not criticize every famous Black woman who says she’s a feminist while praising famous white women for the bare minimum. And let’s not dismiss Beyonce for being sexual while praising…
I think it suggests that everybody is different and has different experiences with marriage and with everything else.
She had a recurring bit/gag part in 21 Jump Street where she managed to be one of the most memorable characters in a pretty great ensemble cast. Even in 50 Shades she really made the most of God-awful writing and ridiculous situations. I think she’s good.
Taxi drivers in NYC and the public transit system in Philly also protested through their profession.
