I think they would. A large amount of Trump's (and Romney's) support comes from the idea that rich people are better than poor people. They know more, they do things better. If Trumpis not as rich as he seems, he is not (in this view) as competent as his supporters think he is.
Politicians do go on the light hearted nonsense shows here in the UK. They will appear on the sofa on This Morning and the like. The difference is that they will also be grilled by real interviewing journalists who want to uncover something related to the truth rather than act as stenographers for racists.
