and Matt Walsh coined it “the most aggressively anti-man, feminist propaganda fest ever put to film.”

“Race” is basically the ways in which a society creates categories that strictly delineate groups of people according (typically) to physical traits apparently uniquely common to that group (skin color, facial features, cranial measurements, etc). The creation of these categories of difference varies from culture to…
Life Without Buildings!! Just an incredible band. Things sound off kilter at first but it’s all so intricate and perfect, the more you listen you come to realize how meticulously it’s all put together. Sue Tompkins used her voice like an instrument in ways that are just befuddling and really atypical (and easily mistak…
Drinking is like anything else: practice, practice, practice.
I am neither a dancer nor a choreographer, but I have a longstanding fascination with graphic notation systems, and there are a several standardized notation systems for dance: Labanotation and Benesh Movement Notation I think are the major two, but there are additional movement notations used in other fields also…
Christian Robinson is a brilliant illustrator. Anything he works on is going to be commendable just on aesthetic value alone, always happy to see more from him!
*AHEM*
This is a wonderful write up, thank you, Ashley! I discovered X-Ray Spex in my early teens by way of riot girl and, more specifically, Kim Gordon’s “other” band Free Kitten. I grew up in a small town with not much access to interesting music, and I relied on mail order catalogs and bugging my parents to find record…
Look, I’m not saying that Matt Gaetz being literally the only person to vote against an anti-human trafficking bill has anything to do with this, but Matt Gaetz being literally the only person to vote against an anti-human trafficking bill sure doesn’t make this whole thing any less weird, okay?
I’m not sure exactly how many lithographs Picasso made, but he produced somewhere in excess of 2,400 prints of different types. Picasso was mindbogglingly prolific. Is it worth buying something like that? If you have lots of money and want a Picasso, sure! (Genuine Picasso lithographs sell from the thousands to the…
Were they possibly prints? Picasso made an extraordinary number of lithographs, linocuts, and etchings (among other things) over the course of 70-odd years. If that’s what he had, they aren’t replicas or facsimiles but originals of a specific print technique that Picasso would have been directly involved in the…
*me, digging out my Bible*
One of my absolute all time favorite albums. After seeing the earlier post about We Insist! I was hoping Black Woman wouldn’t be far behind. I understand how it’s not for everyone, but to me this album is just a thing of pure beauty, a real expression of love. And Linda Sharrock, man, I swear. Anyway, here’s some live…
As Anatole France said, “The law, in its majestic equality, forbids the rich as well as the poor to sleep under bridges, to beg in the streets, and to steal bread.”
(He was not, in fact, doing it right.)
Hot damn! Kelly Reichardt is my favorite living American director, and I am so thrilled for First Cow, and I really, really appreciate this interview. I have nothing useful to contribute comment-wise, just this week’s kinda been a drag and I wanted to note my excitement. Thanks, Hazel!
For real, there’s a reason we’ll abruptly pull the car over on the side of some random ass country road to buy “p-nuts” from out a damn shed. There are also many bars, from dives to cocktail places, that sell heaping bowls of them for like $1, and it’s an absolutely perfect snack while enjoying a beverage.

I recently read my son both Junket is Nice and Now Open the Box, and they were both pretty big hits. But Goodnight Moon remains an absolute favorite with both of us. It is, in my opinion, one of the very great works of American literature, and I will happily read it as many times as is demanded of me.
