I don’t think those were unique to PAL territories though. I have a collection of old Shin Megami Tensei PS1 titles, and they use those exact same case styles. The only seeming difference is the front of the case is also black, albeit with a clear “window.” But the shape, design, thickness, it’s pretty much the same.

Yeah, this is a really cheap way to avoid having to make actual minigames, as next to no work would be required going into this. Get yourself a sprite artist, three-four frames per character, and done. It’s a cheap cop out. Nothing charming about it.

Sad thing is, to be able to win at this kind of tournament, only god knows how much money you had to piss away on cards to stay competitive. Certainly more than any prize money pool.
