I completely agree, but this isn’t a new feature in iOS 17. It’s been in iOS at least since iOS 12:

It sounds similar to the Mobile Passport Control app that CBP already runs. I have Global Entry, but the last half dozen times I’ve had to pass through customs, the MPC app, which anybody can use, has been faster than the Global Entry kiosks, so this sounds like a net positive for everybody.
