...because it indicates that dolphins weren’t harmed in the capture and canning of the tuna? I guess I kind of don’t understand what’s puzzling about it.

A lot of people don’t realize how incredibly intelligent orcas are, they also don’t realize how small those tanks really are. Think about how small the tank is in comparison to the orca. Think about how many body lengths it is in comparison for example. Would you keep an innocent person in basically solitary

Pragmatic view here. All industries need to evolve or die. The writing is on the wall for Sea World: They need to figure out a business model that gets them out of the never-ending argument against animal training and confinement.

I would argue that reporting on this is a further violation of Perry, whether she was or was not a victim of Luke’s. It doesn’t feel like she had any agency in this breaking and that’s gross even if she’s a public figure I’m not particularly interested in

Uh, both the teamsters and construction unions were protesting this immediately after it was passed because driving building projects out of your city doesn’t help homeless people nor does it help working people.

Yet another article about this situation which seems to miss the actual context of this vote. I’m not going to waste time spelling it out again here except to say that the council voted, received intense and immediate backlash from their constituents, and reversed course a month later out of fear of getting voted out.

Part of the problem is that it’s hard to help the homeless. Many of them genuinely suffer from mental illness and will refuse/stop treatment unless you basically hospitalize them and even then, when you release them, they often have nowhere to go so the cycle just starts again. Believe it or not, some homeless people

So are we simply ignoring how ridiculously poorly thought out the head tax was? Considering that each job that Amazon creates actually creates 3.5 jobs in Seattle (due to service jobs, construction jobs, etc.), maybe NOT look to kill the goose laying the golden eggs?

If this guy wasn’t on the FBI watch list before, he certainly is now...And rightfully so. Thanks for your service pal, but just because YOU chose that direction doesn’t mean you can talk about bringing down the very Democracy to swore to uphold while carrying a weapon.

I live in Seattle and grew up here as well. The homelessness problem has gotten really, really bad. I’d like to see real programs to prevent and alleviate homelessness. However, the city council has proven multiple times that it doesn’t know how to spend its fucking money. I’m all for these programs, but only when

A self described “anarchist” telling the government they need to do something.

Grass roots look like a veteran possibly with PTSD who needs treatment?

The problem with this tax was that it was monumentally unpopular with most of the workers in the Seattle area. The reason for that is because the city council has proven to be a pack of doofuses who can’t manage money to save their lives and already have a massively swollen tax revenue to work with due to the rapidly

The citizens of Seattle are some of the most progressive in the country. We vote for taxes on everything. The citizens revolted here, not big business. This has more to do with the citizens of Seattle being tired of mismanagement than the cruel hearts of our Amazon overlords. Seattle spends more money per homeless

Yeah, the way he deported thousands of people to places they never called home to be removed from protection was really humane. What a class act.

“Amazon is evil but through their advertising on Kinja’s sister site, they help pay my salary. I am hypocritical because I am able to criticize amazon for these practices yet more or less directly benefit from them”

They are trying to cover their own asses. The city and county couldn’t make a dent with $195 million last year (plus how many millions in previous years). Why reward their unqualified failure with more money for them to waste?

The city and county spent $195 on homeless services last year. That’s more than enough funding. The problem is the mismanagement of those funds by the city and county government. They didn’t make a meaningful dent with $195 million. That is failure on a grand scale.

This article is poorly researched. King County spent $195 Million per year on homeless people in 2017. According the the Seattle Times there are 11,643 homeless people in Seattle. That represents an annual budget of $16+K per homeless person. The reason there are so many people living on the streets is because
