Based on what I've read, it was always intended to be merely a fun little stopgap until the Switch came out, at which point they didn't want to be competing with themselves. But as you point out, that's them WILDLY misreading who the markets would be for the two systems.

No, the SNES one was a port of Ghouls n' Ghosts.
The NES Ghosts n' Goblins obviously had downgraded graphics, but was a faithful adaptation gameplay-wise (and even the graphics were pretty damn decent for 8-bit).
