I’ve been on the hiring side, and if I have several “dream” candidates, all other things being equal, I’ll pick the “note” applicant. Since you only have the perspective of being the “no note” candidate, I’m not surprised that you’re not seeing the big picture.

I don’t think covering his mouth with his hands was inherently done to hide moments where he breaks. It’s just a physical gag for the character. I can remember many times where Hader wasn’t breaking, yet he still covered his mouth. Just a weirdly funny physical tick.
