I don’t know why backdoor pilots exist any more. The audience didn’t sign on to watch your spinoff. Just do it as a normal show.
So... Ryan, Robert California, and Nellie decide to open a business?
OK, so how tenuous does the connection have to be to be considered a spinoff? Like if Parks and Rec had some paper from Dunder Mifflin delivered there, and then never mention it again, is that a spinoff?
Except people like pizza. Adults eat pizza.
Why not? He’s solid, I like Boat guy and Eric Trump. With the heavy hitters gone, maybe someone besides Bowen and maybe Heidi can have a breakout moment.
Blue River was hilarious. Agreed. Cecily is amazing.
He’s really the only new guy that’s made an impression on me. Good for him for getting the coveted Pete’s replacement bit.
The dog one was funny because Cecily is hilarious at playing that character and I love whenever she does it. I could watch an entire show of that.
Best of luck Dennis. I’ll probably be leaving AVClub with you.
Eh. I loved the idea. The concept of a good variant is funny. But then it just devolved into celebrity cameos.
The family reunion bit was stupid, and I say this as someone who loved the first one and watches it sometimes on youtube. The joke in the first one is John is Ego’s new boyfriend. So she (and therefore the audience) is surprised when he knows more about the guests, and black culture, than she does. But now they’re…
Agree. The five timers sketch is never funny! And there’s no point seeing all these comedy legengs just stand there if they aren’t goin to do anything except make awkward references? Who are these FOR? The audience? Is anyone a fan of John Mulaney and also yay the dad from Friends? If it’s the cast can’t the just hang…
It was so weird seeing a reference to that show. I’m canadian. I was obsessed with that show when I was 7. And now, I can barely remember a thing about it. Weird. I didn’t even know it was canadian. Or that Nickelodeon used slime.
Michael IS a shitty person. But he’s shitty because he’s pathetic, so no one needs to take his shittiness all that seriously. There’s a difference between firing a receptionist by lying about her stealing post-its, because you think it’s fun to bully people, vs you have no idea that TV isn’t real life.
Yeah, the 7th season you could see the quality deflating like a balloon. The last 2 seasons are fully unwatchable.
Blame the Farm spinoff for not working.
It’s the difference between a show lasting 14 episodes vs 200 episodes. The first US season had Michael Scott be more like David Brent, but it’s not really possible to carry that over for that long. You couldn’t believe Michael would still be there, or that none of the other characters would mind him.
I think the people who are upset about the divorce (It was never about the drugs, the announcement about rehab was months before the announcement Olivia Munn was pregnant) were a fan of Mulaney because they liked his persona. It wasn’t that “he had no serious personal problems”, like I said, no one cared about the…
