The word itself has a negative root: the usage of the word generally speaking, is a slur, with the exception of the categories I defined above from Randall Kennedy. This is not how language works, generally. Context and intent are integral to figuring out if a word is offensive or not, or is being used in an offensive way. If I say “Your post is shit” it’s meant in an offensive way, but if I say, “shit, I never thought of that” it’s meant as a compliment. Same word.

The word itself is evocative of violence against actual real people, and to use it in as a reference to another person is to use the history of the word and the definitions attached to it as an attack. This is not a massive leap, that’s literally what makes the word a slur in the first place.
