He was Jewish, but was known to be vocally at odds with Jewish tradition.  This is why the pharisees (a sort of lawyer) would always try to throw off his reasoning when they questioned him.

My theory is that while the law of Moses forbade meat from pigs (they has a “cloven hoof” and were considered unclean), Jesus superceded the law of Moses.
