If you want to block problem ads without supporting the Adblock Plus “Acceptable Ads” racket (where they take money to let problem trackers through) there is always Privacy Badger from EFF.

I wrote a little extension to make it easier to turn this feature on. Just install “pq” to automatically turn on Tracking Protection and fix the third-party cookie policy to be safer (similar to Apple Safari’s):
