Yep, I’ve had to redo headliners on a Ford Tempo and an Olds Cutlass Ciera. Undo the trim. Remove the dome light and take out the cardboard-foam rubber-cloth headliner sandwich. Scrape off the disintegrated foam rubber and glue heavy canvas directly to the cardboard with contact cement. This one fix makes shitboxes

Mercedes had a similar thing in the late 50's early 60's called the Hydrak semiautomatic transmission.  Imagine a steering column shifter with no clutch.
