How much would you pay? It looks bad, but not life threatening. If you want to criticize anyone, question the guy who wanted to pay to get ahead of other more needy people (ie the guy taking the video)

Yeah just ask for the "media rate" most airlines have it. A business card, or press pass will normally do the trick. Not all gate staff even know it's available, so sometime you have to explain it to them. Just having Pelican cases is often enough to get the point across.

Original article commenters have done actual fact checking (unlike Jalopnik) and the story is inaccurate, the cars are not crushed and the location is misidentified.

Oh I cut that wire ring every time, and each of us gets a key. I usually just ziptie them back together when I return the car.

If that is where I think it is (133 / Laguna Canyon Road) there is a fairly decent chance the Tesla driver was on the way to the Tesla headquarters a few miles up the road in Irvine. Perhaps even an employee? Point being the chances of Teslas being in that area are very high.
