I think it has more to do with not having enough money to pursue these sub-niches. That being said, those sub-niches from the German manufacturers aren't exactly flying out the door, so I think GM is smart to stay out of that hot mess and make what we all really want: station wagons with stupidly powerful V8s.

Possibly, but the catch with that is that there are contemporary designs that I do find attractive. I like the Fusion, the CTS, the Taurus, the 6-series, the Focus, etc. It's not that I don't find modern design to be appealing so much as it is that I'm an impossibly nitpicky curmudgeon with really high standards.
