Didn't Fountains of Wayne do this exact same thing on (the presumably far more lucrative) 'Stacy's Mom' and essentially get away with it? I always assumed the palm-muted E chord with the sudden staccato bursts in that song was an obvious homage to 'Just What I Needed' too
