I never played Hunters, but I don't think I would want to play a Metroid game not about Samus. They can expand the universe by exploring new worlds, meeting new species, etc. The bounty hunter / open world / mission concept mentioned in another comment sounds like an interesting way to go.

I can understand maybe dropping Snake, but I would think Sonic would stick around at least. He's always been a "rival" of Mario's (so they should fight!), and the whole Mario & Sonic sports partnership stuff.. I just assumed those 3rd party additions would become part of the standard roster.
