I really try not to, but the r-word occasionally pops out when I'm driving. It's really bad when the kid's in the car when it happens, then I have to explain why we don't use that word, etc. Ingrained ignorance is a problem. The struggle is real!

I think they used it for the lyrics, which I can appreciate - reassertion that June is indeed American. But Tom Petty is pretty horrible, and I can see how that song is jarring and inappropriate, despite my personally knowing it by heart after decades of listening to classic rock radio.
Perhaps they were trying to make the refugees feel comfortable by using familiar terminology.
I bet it's something lost in translation…
