Are you thinking about Limestone? Slate is far less porous than wood, with a typical porosity ratio of 0.4% - 5%. Wood, in comparison, starts at 35% and goes up from there. It is possible some hardwoods are lower, but not by much. Slate can also be chemically sealed with less of a visual change than wood.

Is it possible that everything bad with the early 2000's Tomb Raider is actually fairly accurate to the original games 1990-2000 games? That is to say, tastes change with time and the 90's - 2000 aesthetic and overall approach to tastes may no longer jive with what we now consider good or even acceptable.

That varies from unenforceable to illegal, but I suppose it all depends on the town/city/state. There is very little that would separate what they are doing from what this kid was doing, and one could argue the issuing agent is duping the vehicle owner into thinking it is a municipal parking clerk—and that’s illegal.

Thing is, it was a sequel to mid 80's summer action movie, regardless it being released 36 years later. Not sure what you were expecting in terms of plot, dialog or character development given that backdrop. If you watched the first one with this mindset, you would have disliked that one just as much.
