No, it's not. I started on Gimp some ten years back. It was when I switched to the Adobe tools that I realized that Gimp was sort of kludgy and slow for a lot of graphic design related tasks. When I started asking questions about features that I loved in Photoshop I was talked down to. That's when I decided to give up

I don't understand the desire to turn Gimp into something it's not. No decent OpenType typography, no layer styles, no smart objects, no dice. And when those are brought up to devs and users, I usually hear crickets.

The biggest problem? Line breaks of any variety other than Windows breaks don't show properly. There's a laundry list of others, like syntax highlighting, line numbering, way better find/replace, line-wrapping, etc.

A lot of regular lights (including some tungsten) dump out a much narrower part of the spectrum, which means you'll get some ugly colors once that narrow spectrum bounces off your subject into your camera. This is one of the major issues with most cheap LEDs and CFLs.
