It's supposed to be that way. It's called a Standford Torus. The entire concept in this film is that it's supposed to seem vaguely possible—just out of our reach so that we don't believe it, but close enough that we see human problems in the film that aren't unlike ones of our current world.

The problem (or the beauty) of The Fountain is that's rather subtle in how it speaks of life and death—and how it brings concepts such as enlightenment into play. It takes a couple of watches and some knowledge of (particularly eastern) myth to get. It's not vapid at all.

So many jokes about Klingons and Virgins here, yet so little time.
