In Season 1 (Ep 4 - Why Are You Hitting Yourself?) where Bev tries to set him up with the perfect woman Pops confesses that he already found the perfect woman once (Bev's mom) and no one else compares, so the inference is that he's somewhat trying to fill the void she left behind by dating thousands of women.
