I don't think the show is going the route of Gendry being that. But even if they did would someone from a blood line that ruled for generations really be outweighed by someone that overthrew a king 20 years ago?

Disagree. The High Sparrow knew something was wrong but wanted to save face in front of an important group of people. If he caved to a young girl like that, think of the damage that does to his image. And no one anticipated an explosion - they were probably expecting armed soldiers whom they could have fought off
