I think the last scene shows everything one needs to know why the sex happens. I see it this way.
They both realise Matha must be killed. Elizabeth cannot hide her satisfaction (a smirk) and Phillip cannont hide his distress. She notices it and changes tone ("we will do for her what is possible"). This doesn't work…
