I'm sure part of it is because, if your audience is all on YouTube, making a video is literally the only way TO communicate with them. It's not like, say, DeviantArt, where they also give you a blog space.

Not quite; the cartoon (called "Ghostbusters") was from 1986, and was based on "The Ghost Busters", a live-action series from 1975 that just happened to be owned by a major TV animation studio. It was a pretty blatant cash grab.

And then cutting to a clip of the "repairman-man-man-man" from "All That". Funnily enough, that wasn't even the first song he'd talked about that year that did that: Lady Gaga did it with "I live for the applause-plause, live for the applause-plause".
