I finished it last night. I'd probably give it a B-/C+. Some of the problems I had are resolved by the end, but I really think this is going to be a minor work. A lot hinges on finding certain people charismatic that don't come across that way in the writing. It's not a piece of shit, GAWKER, but it's frustrating.
Reread The Corrections instead.
The first person narration felt jarring to me. I want Franzen to be a godlike narrator. I really, really struggle with that section.
That's fucking terrible. And, noting that all of the reviewer's pull quotes were from the front of the book, I'll bet a hundred bucks she read the first section and skimmed the rest.
