I think that's usually just hypocrisy though. A lot easier (and more fun) to recognize the fault in others than in ourselves.

How much were you paid for that comment?

I'd actually guess this is a great sign for the IT movie. At this point the executive producers have seen final or near-final cuts of the movie and must be confident they have a hit on their hands.

Pat was a pop culture icon and one of the most widely recognized faces of androgyny when many currently-living adult trans people were still kids figuring themselves out—as were many currently-living transphobic people. The influence of the shows we grew up with doesn't just evaporate the second they go off the air.

Look through this slideshow of trans people murdered in 2016. See if you notice a trend.

You jumped on me for posting "too much" about something you insist is ridiculous to even care about in the first place and when you failed to get any internet high fives for putting me in my place you pretend to be interested in conversation. Read my posts elsewhere in this thread if you care to know my thoughts

Yep and a whole lot of trans adults watched television 27 years ago—many of them were kids struggling to come to terms with gender dysphoria just as a popular recurring comedy sketch centered around the ridiculousness of not clearly asserting your gender. Twenty seven years isn't always enough time to forget something

It's a damned tough gig and I'd like to think the changes in trends of what is acceptable humor have been in a positive direction. I'm a straight cis woman so I don't know how much it's worth, but I don't really blame Julia Sweeney for not being more conscious that she was apparently hurting trans people when trans

That's a great interpretation and I'm glad you found it empowering. The one positive thing about the movie was that Pat and a nice person named Chris (Dave Foley) met and fell in love and they lived happily ever after.

Yeah, and I remember being a straight cis kid and worrying that people would call me Pat if I cut my hair too short. If I were actively uncomfortable identifying as female I'm sure Pat would have made such choices even more daunting.

Oh sorry, I should be more respectful of people skipping past the article to post their hot takes on a headline. My bad for having conversations like a dummy lol

It's a pretty provocative word choice, sure. But seeing as we all understand time travel doesn't exist I'm sure Soloway understands there's not a lot we can do to change the history of a D-level sketch from two decades ago. But it -was- a really well known sketch that communicated to millions of people that it's okay

I don't think Soloway bringing up It's Pat at a panel where people specifically invited them to voice their opinion on media qualifies as feuding but okay

It was a panel about trans representation in the media

What on earth

Oh shut the fuck up. You visited a website about pop culture discussion instead of checking up on greenpeace or NPR. Guess you just don't care about the world's problems enough, huh?

Pat makes a sex joke, audience laughs. Pat announces they have hot plans for the weekend, the other actors act confused or gag, audience laughs. In the movie, a demented villain is attracted to Pat. The joke was that Pat's a weird nerd and the idea of Pat having any sort of sexuality is creepy and disgusting.

Soloway was discussing this at a panel specifically about trans representation in media. It was a very well known SNL character. This isn't digging very deep.

Because of fucking Pat???

Don't Punch Down.
