The thing is, the viewer watches events unfold through the eyes of the main characters, and how actions affect them. It's not the event itself that matters, but a character's reaction to it. The Sopranos did it better than anyone.

I actually caught Ocean's 12 all the way through for the first time. I think the reason it's not highly regarded is because not only is Clooney not in the final third, but he kind of disappears from the film without a great final moment or monologue.
