I mean, that sounds like it would be nice if we could get some Canadian influence down here.

I know it was DreamWorks, but I found the connection: Lorne Cameron, who has a writing credit on The Nut Job, also has one on Over the Hedge. I think he was probably involved in the production. ;)

I believe this movie shares some kind behind-the-scenes folks (writers or animators, IIRC?) with Over the Hedge, which I vaguely remember half-enjoying, back when I saw it at the drive-in in 2006.

[said in a high-pitched chipmunk voice] AWK-WARRRRRD

In a way, it's sort of an early, remedial introduction to being meta — ironically commenting on something that seems dangerous but reassuring kids that it's just fun and awesome because it's a movie, or saying the implicit threat ("we're all gonna die!") out loud. So I guess there's a kind of built-in thrill that some

You might be happier if you watched The Simpsons.

Eh, it's OK.

I dunno, I think there's a lot of retroactive rolling Travolta's later, hammier imitations of this performance into this one, because I think he's pretty electric in Face/Off (and does an admirable job riffing on the Cage mannerisms). I'm surprised how many people consider this just one more bad American Woo film. I'm

More brandy for everyone!

COUNTERPOINT: L.A. Confidential has zero (0) scenes where a guy hits a ship's propeller on his way down to the briny deep.

Ugh. I'm not a big fan of the "distinctive writer-director should really find a co-writer" critique. If you think there are ways he could improve his writing, sure, but it just smacks of cheesy screenwriter problem-solving. It's up there with "direct someone else's script!!"

"Makes sense" is a boring prerequisite.

Maybe, but it seems a little perverse to me to take one of the more distinct voices and cinema and say, he should really adapt more novels. I don't fault the guy for not wanting to do that. Though I do love Jackie Brown, I'm not even sure it's much less indulgent than some of his others. It's still well over 150

Just remember that correlation does not imply causation.

My credibility!!!!

I said it has a petty origin story — that Simon was miffed that Garfunkel was off making a movie. It doesn't really reflect in the song itself, which is lovely.

Strictly speaking, the plot does not require it.

CORBIN. CORBIN. CORBIN CORBIN

I think it is, to some extent, but the critical eye is not really there in the writing or the movie (at least not the movie I saw).
