Yes why aren't they doing that? Ugh, same reason they do everything else they do. Because they are a random group of survivors that are just annoying and petty and don't seem particularly intelligent..yet are somehow watchable!

So why don't they now go and start searching for solar paneled rich homes..and check the freezers?? Or is this goofy, annoying, spoiled, silly, random group of petty survivors (that are somehow so watchable)just too stupid to think of that?
