It was cheaper to shoot it that way - shoot and overcompensate so it could be cropped in theaters. No new equipment needed. They'd just fix it in Projection so directors filmed with that in mind. So it should be cropped, not showing the whole image. Another reason was for TV. Didn't do letterbox back then so…

I think that was the point. They didn't want to do Tales From the Darkside, Amazing Stories, Tales from the Crypt, The Hitchhiker. The show was a bit humorless and dry… but it was fantastic.
