I had the same experience a couple of years ago when I received the
book as a thoughtful gift from a friend. I felt like I had to like it,
but I found it incredibly boring and pointless and could barely finish

Yeah, it was a balance act and she could've easily been an unlikeable bitch, but I ended up feeling she was really genuine. She seems quite young, I hope she'll show up in more roles soon!
