Because it's Spielberg, it's easy to lump this in with his exceptional works that end with goofy happy endings. Not just that the good guys win, but in such a lame fashion, like Grandpa with his sweater tied over his shoulders in War of the Worlds, or the idyllic summer home in Minority Report, or old guy at Normandy

While Spielberg is credited solely for Close Encounters, it's well known that Paul Schrader did the bulk of it but balked when Spielberg wanted to tack on a happy ending, so had his name removed.

This movie is a true classic, for all of the reasons you mention, but I don't recall any suggestion that the third act is part of his imagination, or his guilty conscience. But it has been a few years since I've seen it so I may not remember some of the details.
