That's true, and his films are so damn consistently great. But I'd peg Fuller as more of an auteur-despite-himself than a journeyman. It only takes about 10 seconds to realise you're watching a Fuller film — e.g. the woman screaming at the start of 'House of Bamboo', that bizarre scuffle at the start of 'The Naked…

Ah, I love that film. 'And I woke up… in the crazy house!' It's just utterly ridiculous, probably the broadest, nuttiest noir ever made.
There is something quite special about the 'journeyman director' role during the studio system's heyday (Michael Curtiz, Robert Wise, etc.). Churning out something in a different genre every six months or so would have been wonderful, and that frenetic pace was responsible for many, many gems.
