I don't see any way they could have changed Dany's "white saviour" thing from the books though, that's literally her entire story? They'd have had to invent 6 seasons of entirely new story out of whole cloth, and (not sure on this point) GRRM would have to sign off on it too?

You can blame good old GRRM for that one, though. It's not like they invented the plot of Game Of Thrones (until recently). They just adapted the existing book. White savior tropes and all.
