I thought Ward tried to save the geeks by not actually killing them, and at least giving them a chance to live while still satisfying Garrett. I also thought it wasn't Ward with the scope and the dog but Garrett watching what Ward did.

He used them the other week to listen to the FBI (or related baddies) come up the stairs. I wonder if the Royals know how the zombie thing affected Nick, but I suspect Trubel was written in to help the Grimmsters when Nick's depowered.
