I saw D'Angelo play on a pier in downtown Seattle (the venue no longer exists). Even though he was mostly copying Prince (circa 1986 Sign O The Times tour) it was one of the best shows I've ever seen in my life. The man can entertain like few others.

I recently read where the director intended it to be a bad plan. He wanted to emphasize these were teenagers who had scant information about what this creature was, what its vulnerabilities were (if any) and that they were acting haphazardly. I'd say he succeeded in that goal.
