I've never fully understood this. It's like "highbrows" who cannot stand nudity and then go to the art museum to view paintings and sculptures of nudes. Have you ever noticed the amount of gore in classic paintings? Especially in church sponsored renaissance art, such as Caravaggio's "Judith Beheading Holofernes".

it's even better than that. It is the upside-down form of the tarot card. Tarot cards are supposed to have a different meaning when they are upside down. (I learned this from Carnivale) From some random tarot site:
