When normal vampires die the compulsion doesn't wear off. That was why Damon was surprised Katherine got out of the tomb when they killed Elijah in season 2. That's supposed to be an original thing. But you're right; Elena and Katherine took the cure and years of compulsion didn't wear off. Liam would have remembered

Lol. I think that's what happens when you have a show based on comic books and people read comics. I think they've given up on the secret identities of the villains being, secret from the audience. But I do feel there's more to Julian being Alchemy than meets the eye.

I think there's more to it than him just being the bad guy though. I don't think Julian is willingly alchemy from that scene. I'm thinking maybe split personalities like in the comics.

Does anyone else think the dragon is Lily' dad?
