I came here to say this. I once saw a short documentary on Charlie Chaplin in which he would agonize over colors to find the right gray tone on film. Also, Alfred Hitchcock's stage blood wasn't actually red, as red would show up as a lighter gray on film, so he used a dark brown, if I recall.
