My confusion stems from "… the first director to helm a film …" It sounds like this is the first time they're hiring someone whose business card says "Director" to make their movie.

I saw it in initial release, and laughed harder than I ever had at any movie except Young Frankenstein. My girlfriend, not so much. I've subsequently tried to turn friends and family on to it, to little avail. I still think it's as consistently good as anything he's done.
