Yeah, agreed, but like Golden Compass it wasn't perfect either. The casting was spot on at the time though (again, like Golden Compass).
Maybe we'll get a Dark Materials Netflix show in years to come. ;)

IIRC they're doing the first 4 books in the first season. Probably a bit more though, since I remember they cast the Quagmires as well, and they show up in the 5th book.
